How Righteous Are You?

Yi Khen, one of our covenant partners at GCC preached through the second of our “The King’s Speech” series, with Matthew 5:13-20.  We were reminded that Christ’s righteousness does not invalidate the law, but instead fulfills it perfectly. We can rest in the knowledge that we have a holy God who gave us a good, good law that we would never be able to obey completely ourselves, not by any stretch or standard of our own morality, but also gave His Son who fulfills it perfectly, a gracious and merciful sacrifice that we do not deserve.

It is why when a Christian contemplates the question:  “How righteous are you?”, we can acknowledge the depths of our sin, unrighteousness and unlovable nature before God, yet also hold on tightly to the deep, hopeful knowledge that it is Christ who is perfectly righteous and has declared us so by His blood. We are righteous not because we obey laws better than others, or do more moral acts. We are only righteous through the mercy of the King. Because of God’s grace, our obedience is not a duty but a delight. We are free to live beautiful, bright lives as “salt and light”, bringing many to witness the glory of God!
